A study on death: Part two

PART TWO: How Christ Broke the Adamic Pattern of Death

Summary of Part One: Adam’s pattern explains why men die.

The pattern: The judicial death sentence for sin leads to sin causing spiritual/relational separation from God who is the source of life, which inevitably leads eventually to physical death.

Now we will see that Christ’s pattern explains why believers live.

1. Christ bore the judicial sentence of death:

Romans 5:8b (KJV) ...Christ died for us.

Adam brought the sentence of death upon all mankind. Christ put himself under that sentence in our place, bearing the curse, the condemnation, the wrath, the guilt and the legal penalty.

This is the full satisfaction of the judicial death Adam incurred when he ate from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil

For the believer, the judicial sentence is removed entirely:

Romans 8:1a (KJV) There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus,

Christ breaks the first link in Adam’s chain.

2. Christ bore the effects of spiritual/relational death:

Matthew 27:46 (KJV) My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

Adam’s sin produced immediate relational separation from God. Christ, though eternally one with the Father, enters the experience of forsakenness (the penalty of spiritual death) without ever becoming spiritually dead himself.

He bears the darkness, the distance, the abandonment, the felt separation and the relational agony of wrath.

Christ breaks the second link in Adam’s chain.

3. Christ overcame physical death by resurrection:

Romans 14:9a (KJV) For this end Christ both died, and rose, and revived…

Adam’s spiritual death led inevitably to physical death. Christ entered physical death willingly, then conquered it by rising bodily.

His resurrection destroys death’s power, guarantees the believer’s resurrection, transforms physical death into “sleep”, removes its sting and makes it gain rather than loss.

Christ breaks the third link in Adam’s chain.

Question: If Christ has broken all links in Adam's chain, why do believers still die physically?

Answer: Believers die physically because the body remains mortal, still part of the old creation, still time‑limited and still awaiting redemption.

Paul states this clearly:

Romans 8:10 (KJV) And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.

The believer’s spirit participates in Christ’s life now, while their body participates in Adam’s mortality until resurrection.

Summary: Physical death for the believer is no longer penalty, but transition.
