Doing everything (?) to the glory of God

1 Corinthians 10:31 (KJV) Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.

This verse in not permission to retrospectively attach a godly motivation to self-focused decisions we have made about how we would invest our time, talents and energy - “I give God the glory for my amazing success, the adulation I receive from my global fanbase and eye-watering amounts of money I have earned from the sport I have chosen to commit my life to.”

The key to understanding Paul’s instruction here is found a few verses earlier:

1 Corinthians 10:24 (KJV) Let no man seek his own, but every man another's wealth.

Putting the two verses together, we are to choose to spend our time in things which are for the benefit of others (aka the work of the ministry), and our motivation for so doing should be to bring glory to God.
