How does God speak to us today?
God speaks to us today through his word ie through scripture.
Paul's ministry, and the revelations given him, completed the word of God to men:
Colossians 1:25 (KJV) Whereof I am made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to fulfil the word of God;
We know that:
• The word of God is the written word we have (see Mark 7:10-13 where Jesus quotes from Exodus and designates what he has quoted as “the word of God”), and that
• The written word is ‘scripture’:
Romans 15:4 (KJV) For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.
If God spoke outside of scripture today (ie outside the written word) that would make him at best confused and at worst a liar:
2 Timothy 3:16-17 (KJV) All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.
It is "all scripture" (ie the entirety of the written word of God) which throughly furnishes us unto all good works.
It is not anything else.
Disappointed that God does not speak outside of scripture today? Read 2 Timothy 3:16-17 again and don't be.
